The trash can has a button, lights and a custom smoke machine. Pressing the button gives a small delay before light effects start and a heating element and fan heat and disperse glycerin to simulate smoke. It runs off of a rechargeable battery so that it could easily be moved around the stage.

Because size was crucial for the match, it was created using an ATtiny and a supercapacitor as a battery supply. The ATtiny registered a button press to control the flame lighting element on the end. The final size was not much bigger than a physical match.
